Artis Zoo

ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and one of the five oldest zoos in the world. Founded in 1838, it occupies a surprisingly peaceful and green corner of central Amsterdam, surrounded by historic buildings, mature trees and carefully maintained botanical gardens.

The zoo is home to animals and plants from around the world. Rather than feeling like an enormous modern safari park, ARTIS has an intimate atmosphere shaped by winding paths, ponds, gardens and 26 listed monuments. This combination of nature, animals and architecture makes it enjoyable for adults as well as families with children.

A major highlight is the historic ARTIS Aquarium, which reopened in 2026 following an extensive renovation. Admission to the aquarium is included with a regular zoo ticket. The ARTIS Planetarium is also included and presents daily shows exploring Earth, the solar system and the wider universe. English audio is available for most performances.

Throughout the day, zookeepers give talks about the animals, their behaviour and conservation. Free guided tours are also organised during weekends. Check the daily schedule when you arrive, as the programme changes regularly.

ARTIS-Micropia and the ARTIS-Groote Museum are located beside the zoo on Artisplein. Micropia is the world’s first museum devoted entirely to microbes, while the Groote Museum explores the connections between humans and the natural world. Both require separate admission, although discounted combination tickets are available.
