Brouwerij 't IJ

Founded in 1985, Brouwerij ’t IJ is one of the pioneers of Amsterdam’s modern craft-beer scene. Its original brewery and tasting room are housed inside a former municipal bathhouse beside De Gooyer, one of the city’s most recognisable windmills.

Despite its famous appearance, the beer is not actually brewed inside the windmill. The mill serves as an impressive landmark beside Proeflokaal De Molen, where visitors can enjoy freshly poured Brouwerij ’t IJ beers inside or on the large outdoor terrace.

The brewery produces a broad selection of Belgian-inspired and modern craft beers. Its best-known creations include IJwit, a refreshing wheat beer and the brewery’s most popular choice, Zatte, a strong and slightly sweet tripel first brewed in 1985, Natte, a dark and malty dubbel; and its hop-forward IPA. Seasonal beers such as PaasIJ, IJbok and IJndejaars regularly appear throughout the year.

A beer tasting is the easiest way to discover several different styles. Traditional Amsterdam snacks, including cheese, ossenworst, bread and charcuterie, are available alongside the drinks.

Guided brewery tours take place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The tour explains the brewing process and the story behind Brouwerij ’t IJ before visitors return to the tasting room to continue exploring the beers.

Visit on a weekday afternoon for a better chance of finding a table on the terrace. For a brewery tour, come on Friday, Saturday or Sunday: the regular English tour starts at 15:00 and the Dutch tour at 16:00. Places can be reserved, but same-day registration at the bar is also possible.
