Café Bolle Jan
About
Café Bolle Jan
Café Bolle Jan is not a daytime café or conventional brown bar. It is a tiny, exuberant live-music venue where Dutch songs, packed crowds and collective singing form the entire experience. The current café has occupied its location on Rembrandtplein since 1981 and remains a family-run Amsterdam institution.
Live performers appear every evening, singing a mixture of Dutch popular music, sentimental levensliederen and familiar party songs. This is not karaoke: professional entertainers lead the evening while almost everyone in the room joins the chorus.
The interior is compact, warmly lit and often extremely crowded. Regulars stand shoulder to shoulder around the bar, drinks are kept simple and the atmosphere usually becomes louder as the night progresses. International visitors are welcome, although most lyrics and audience interaction are in Dutch.
