About

Cafe de Dokter

Toscanini is a cozy Italian restaurant known for its authentic pasta dishes and warm atmosphere. Inspired by traditional Tuscan cooking, the menu features handmade pasta, seasonal ingredients, and carefully selected wines. Guests can enjoy classic favorites such as carbonara, tagliatelle al ragù, and fresh seafood specials. The intimate setting makes it ideal for both casual dinners and special occasions. Friendly service and consistently high-quality food have made Toscanini a local favorite in Almere.

Café De Dokter, affectionately known as Het Doktertje, is hidden inside the narrow Rozenboomsteeg, just a few steps from the busy Kalverstraat. Measuring only around eighteen square metres, it is considered one of the smallest cafés in Amsterdam.

The café was founded in 1798 by a surgeon connected to the nearby Binnengasthuis hospital. It originally became a meeting place for doctors and medical students, which explains both its name and the collection of old medical objects found throughout the interior. More than two centuries later, Café De Dokter remains in the same family.

Stepping inside feels like entering a perfectly preserved time capsule. Dark wooden panelling, antique clocks, chandeliers, birdcages, paintings and countless mysterious objects fill almost every available centimetre. Many of the decorations have developed a thick patina of dust over the years, deliberately left untouched as part of the café’s unique character.

Soft jazz plays in the background while regulars and curious visitors sit closely together around the tiny bar. The drinks selection includes beer, wine, Dutch jenever, gin and tonics and an unexpectedly impressive collection of whiskies. Simple Dutch snacks such as cheese and ossenworst are available alongside the drinks.

Café De Dokter is one of Amsterdam’s most fascinating and genuinely unique brown cafés. Its tiny dimensions, centuries-old family history and extraordinary interior make it feel more like a private living room or cabinet of curiosities than a conventional bar. An essential hidden gem, but not the place for large groups or a loud night out.
