Café Hegeraad is a long-established neighbourhood café on the edge of the Noordermarkt. Its dark colours, patterned rugs covering the tables, old clocks and traditional back room create the feeling that remarkably little has changed here over the years.

The café opens early and changes character naturally throughout the day. Mornings revolve around coffee, homemade cakes and quiet conversation. Later, locals arrive for sandwiches, beer and traditional snacks such as bitterballen, cheese bites and toasties.

Hegeraad becomes particularly lively during the Monday market and Saturday farmers’ market outside. The small terrace is excellent for watching the activity around the square, although finding a table can become difficult on busy market mornings.
