About
Cafe Hoppe
Café Hoppe is one of Amsterdam's most legendary brown cafés and has stood on the Spui since 1670. Originally founded as a jenever distillery with a tasting room, Hoppe has welcomed generations of writers, politicians, artists and beer lovers. Former Queen Beatrix visited the café, Freddy Heineken was a regular guest and Hans van Mierlo laid the foundations for the Dutch political party D66 here. The café consists of two sections. The historic standing area at number 18 is a protected monument and has remained virtually unchanged for centuries. The famous wooden barrels behind the bar are reminders of the days when Hoppe distilled its own jenever. In the 1930s, owner Harry Mustert connected number 18 with the neighboring building at number 20, creating the famous combination of Standing Hoppe and Sitting Hoppe that still exists today. Whether you come for breakfast, bitterballen, a glass of jenever or Friday afternoon drinks, Hoppe remains one of Amsterdam's most iconic meeting places.
