Stedelijk Museum

The Stedelijk Museum is the Netherlands’ leading museum for modern and contemporary art and design. Located beside the Van Gogh Museum on Museumplein, its collection follows artistic developments from the late 19th century to the present day.

Major movements such as De Stijl, Bauhaus, CoBrA, abstract expressionism and Pop Art are represented through paintings, sculptures, photography, video, furniture and graphic design. Look for works by Piet Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich, Marc Chagall, Karel Appel, Gerrit Rietveld, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol.

The collection galleries provide an accessible journey through modern art, while the temporary exhibitions introduce influential contemporary artists and experimental new work. Displays regularly change, so each visit can offer something different.

The building is also part of the experience. Its historic brick exterior connects to a striking white modern extension commonly nicknamed “the bathtub”, one of the most recognisable pieces of contemporary architecture on Museumplein.
