Tuschinski Movie Theater

Royal Theatre Tuschinski turns an ordinary cinema visit into one of Amsterdam’s most atmospheric cultural experiences. Opened in 1921, the building combines Art Deco, Jugendstil and Amsterdam School architecture in wonderfully theatrical fashion.

The elaborate façade is only the beginning. Inside, visitors encounter stained glass, carved wood, colourful carpets, murals, decorative lighting and a grand foyer designed to create the feeling of entering another world.

The highlight is the Grote Zaal, or Screen 1. This magnificent auditorium resembles an old opera house, with balconies, private boxes, sweeping decorations and a working film organ. It remains a popular location for major Dutch film premieres while offering modern projection and sound technology.

Tuschinski now contains six screens and shows a mixture of international blockbusters, independent films and special screenings. In 2021, it was named the world’s most beautiful cinema by Time Out and received the official Royal designation during its centenary year.

Tuschinski is not simply somewhere to watch a movie, it is one of Amsterdam’s most beautiful historic interiors. Even travellers who rarely visit cinemas should consider seeing a film here. The combination of glamorous architecture, modern cinema technology and a central location makes it an excellent evening activity, particularly on a rainy day or romantic night out.
