Warung Spang Makandra
About
Warung Spang Makandra
Warung Spang Makandra has served authentic Surinamese and Javanese-Surinamese food in De Pijp since 1978. Its name means eating or sharing together, reflecting both the generous portions and its long-standing role as a meeting place for Amsterdam’s Surinamese community.
Surinamese cuisine developed through a unique combination of Indigenous, African, Hindustani, Javanese, Chinese and European culinary traditions. The Javanese influence is particularly important at Spang Makandra and can be tasted in dishes such as saoto soup, chicken satay, ayam pedis, nasi, bami and richly filled rames plates.
The extensive menu also includes roti, moksi meti, rendang, pom and meat or vegetables prepared with curry, ketjap and spicy sambal. Smaller snacks include bara, fried plantain and cassava with salted cod.
The setting is informal and lively, while portions are substantial and prices remain accessible. It works equally well for a quick lunch, takeaway meal or casual dinner after visiting the nearby Albert Cuyp Market.
